Cinema: The Movies

National Film Preservation Foundation

Not a place to find popular films, this site is devoted to the preservation of America's film heritage. The focus of the NFPF is to ensure that historically and culturally important films are preserved and made available for study and exhibition.

Internet Movie Database

A great site for movie lovers! Arguably the best place to find information about a specific film, the Internet Movie Database can help you find details for over 200,000 titles – not only regular films, but also TV films and TV shows. You can find information about cast and crew, ratings and reviews, plot summaries and memorable quotes, related websites, pictures, etc. Also, under 'Fun stuff' are treats for the real movie fanatic: movie trivia, and goofs - small inconsistencies that only the most attentive viewers pick up on. This is a movie site for real movie buffs.

MovieWeb: The Internet Movie Network

Good place to get basic information on recent and upcoming films. The MovieWeb database contains some 2,000 titles of movies from 1995 up to the present. Among the available features is an all-time top 50 based on ticket receipts , and an entire part of the website devoted to home video.

Movies.com

A site intended to help entertainment-seekers select the perfect movie to watch, by providing listings of theatre times, video/dvd availability, ratings and reviews, box office results, etc. The diligent movie-night planner's dream come true.

The Greatest Films

Though cosmetically tacky and infested by pop-up ads, this site is unique, interesting, and informative. Its mission is to record the greatest movies of all time, and to explore what it is that makes a movie great. In-depth information is available for most titles, brought to life by film posters. This site is mostly devoted to "Classic Hollywood"/American films. Write-ups often contain large chunks of dialogue from the films.

Apart from top-100's, you can also find Oscar nominess and winners, as well as a list of should-have's. Specific aspects of what makes for greatness can be explored through the wide range of "greatest" lists: greatest moments and scenes, directors, film star roles, etc. The Genre section provides concise descriptions of various film genres illustrated by specific movies. The extensive and well-wrought History section adds to a discussion per decade, a list of greatest films per year.
