American Memory
A gateway to primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. The site offers more than 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections. The materials can be searched by topic and by format (including music)

African American Odyssey
This special section of the American Memory project traces African American history from Slavery to Civil Rights, in IX chapters.

America’s Story
(part of America’s Library)
A government-sponsored site, with a brief survey of the history of the U.S. (in 12 short chapters), with many further links – also to individual states, their history, tourism etc.. Also offers individual stories on "Amazing Americans" such as Buffalo Bill, Pocahontas etc. ). Also audio and video fragments.

 

Archiving Early America
Early America is explored through the media of the day (background and facsimile reproductions of newspapers, maps, magazines and writings). The topics include The Declaration of Independence; The Constitution; The Bill of Rights; Milestone Events; Maps; The Lives of Early Americans; How to Read a 200 Year Old Document; Notable Women of Early America.

Biography Online
This site incorporates biographical information from the "Cambridge Encyclopedia Database," the "AND Reference Data Ltd.," and "The Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography."

 

Civil War - This site, dedicated to the PBS series about the Civil war, offers some very interesting interactive photo galleries of Civil War images.


Encyclopaedia of USA History 1840-1980
Part of the British Spartacus Schoolnet. Subsections are devoted to, e.g., Slavery in the United States, American Civil War, Novelists and Poets, etc.

This large site on USA history, designed for teachers but also interesting for the average Internet user, serves as a gateway to web resources and offers unique teaching materials.

Historychannel.com
The History Channel has an interesting collection of 20th century speeches. From Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I have a dream" to Lou Gehrig's farewell to baseball.
